The corporate gift you send says something about your organisation. The question is whether it says what you intend.
A gift chosen carefully communicates: we value this relationship, we paid attention, we wanted to give you something worth receiving. A gift chosen carelessly communicates the opposite β not through any single flaw, but through the accumulated impression of something that was not thought about very hard.
Chocolate is one of the most common corporate gifts in India, and one of the most frequently given badly. Here is a practical guide to doing it well β what to look for in a luxury chocolate brand, what to avoid, and what actually makes a corporate gift memorable.
1. Start with the Ingredients
The single most important question to ask a chocolate brand before placing a corporate order is: do you use real chocolate or compound?
Compound chocolate β made with vegetable fat instead of cocoa butter β is significantly cheaper than couverture chocolate and is used in the majority of mass-market chocolate products in India. It is not inherently bad, but it produces a different experience: a slower melt, a slightly waxy texture, a flavour that is less complex and less lingering than real chocolate.
When you give someone a premium corporate gift, they expect a premium experience. Compound chocolate, however well-packaged, does not deliver that experience. The recipient may not be able to articulate why the chocolate felt slightly off β but they will feel it.
Ask the question directly. A brand that uses real couverture will tell you immediately and with confidence. A brand that hedges or changes the subject is telling you something.
2. Evaluate the Packaging Honestly
Packaging is the first impression of a corporate gift. It is what the recipient sees before they taste anything, and it sets the expectation for everything that follows.
Good corporate gift packaging should feel substantial without being excessive. It should open cleanly and reveal the contents in a way that creates a moment β not just a transaction. It should be finished on the inside as well as the outside, because the inside is what the recipient actually sees.
Ask to see a sample before placing a large order. A brand that is confident in its packaging will send one without hesitation. Look at the weight of the box, the quality of the closure, the arrangement of the contents. Ask yourself: if I received this, would I be impressed?
Also consider: does the packaging survive transit? A beautiful box that arrives crushed is worse than a plain box that arrives intact. Ask the brand how they handle shipping, particularly in summer, and what their policy is if something arrives damaged.
3. Check the Shelf Life
Corporate gifts are often ordered weeks in advance and distributed over a period of days or weeks. The chocolate needs to remain in good condition throughout this window.
Fresh ganache and cream-filled truffles have a shorter shelf life than bars, dragΓ©es, or bark β typically two to three weeks refrigerated. For large corporate orders that will be distributed over time, products with a longer shelf life are more practical.
Ask the brand for the shelf life of each product you're considering, and plan your order and distribution timeline accordingly. A brand that is transparent about shelf life is a brand that is thinking about your experience, not just the sale.
4. Assess Reliability at Scale
A brand that makes beautiful chocolate in small batches is not automatically a brand that can fulfil a corporate order of 200 boxes on a specific date. These are different capabilities, and it is worth asking about both.
Questions to ask: What is your minimum order quantity for corporate gifting? What lead time do you need for an order of our size? Can you guarantee delivery by a specific date? What happens if there is a production issue β how do you communicate and what is your contingency?
A brand that has handled corporate orders before will have clear answers to these questions. A brand that hasn't may still be worth working with, but you should factor the uncertainty into your planning.
5. Consider Customisation β Carefully
Many corporate gifting programmes want to add branding β a logo on the box, a custom message card, branded ribbon. This is reasonable and most quality chocolate brands can accommodate it.
What to avoid: over-branding that makes the gift feel like a marketing exercise rather than a gift. A box with your company logo printed prominently across the lid communicates that the primary purpose of the gift was to promote your brand. Recipients notice this, and it changes how the gift lands.
The most effective corporate gifts let the quality of the product do the brand-building work. A recipient who receives something genuinely exceptional will associate that experience with the giver. That association is more valuable than a logo on a lid.
A tasteful message card, a subtle brand element on the interior, or a custom ribbon is usually enough. The chocolate should be the hero.
6. Ask About the Story
In an era where provenance and craft matter to consumers, a corporate gift that comes with a story is more memorable than one that doesn't. Where is the chocolate made? By whom? From what ingredients? What makes this brand different from the alternatives?
A brand with a genuine story β one that is specific, honest, and interesting β gives the gift an additional dimension. The recipient doesn't just receive chocolate; they receive a connection to something made with care by real people in a real place.
This is not a small thing. In a world of generic corporate gifts, a gift with a story is the one that gets talked about.
